The grief of losing your job — more than a layoff

Losing a job is often treated as a practical problem — update the résumé, start applying. But beneath the logistics is a genuine grief. Work gives us identity, structure, purpose, and belonging. When it disappears, so does a large part of how we understand ourselves.

What you are really losing

  • Identity — the answer to “what do you do?”
  • Daily structure and a sense of purpose.
  • Community and belonging with colleagues.
  • Security, and confidence in the future.

The feelings that come with it

Shock, shame, anger, anxiety, and a blow to self-worth are all common. You may feel you have lost not just a role but a part of who you are. This is grief, and it deserves the same compassion as any other loss.

You lost a job, not your worth. Your value was never only what you produced.

Moving forward gently

Allow yourself to grieve before rushing into the next thing. Keep some structure in your days, lean on support, and separate your self-worth from your job title. In time, this loss can also become an opening.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to grieve after losing a job?

Yes. A job provides identity, structure, purpose, and belonging. Losing it brings real grief that goes far beyond the loss of income.

Why does losing a job hurt my sense of self?

Work is deeply tied to identity and status. When it ends, it can feel like losing part of who you are, which is why job loss can shake your self-worth.

How do I cope with the grief of unemployment?

Let yourself grieve before rushing ahead, keep some daily structure, lean on support, and remember your worth is not defined by your job title.
